Invalid Engine Speed Signal

The engine control unit (ECU) relies on the crankshaft position sensor to know how fast the engine is running. If this sensor sends a weird signal, it might show an incorrect RPM reading or give no signal at all.

The ECU expects a square waveform from the crankshaft position sensor with voltage levels switching from 0V (off) to about 5V (on). If the signal stays too low or too high for a certain period (over 200 ms), it triggers the code.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check the engine speed sensor wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. If there are issues, repair or replace as necessary. Decision: If fixed, clear codes and test drive. If not, proceed to step 2.
2. 22. Use a multimeter to check the crankshaft position sensor output. At idle, you should see a voltage between 0-5V toggling rapidly. If no signal or stuck voltage, replace the sensor. Decision: If you find no signal, replace the crankshaft position sensor and recheck. If signal is present, proceed to step 3.
3. 33. Inspect the ECU connectors and wiring for corrosion or damage. Tighten and clean where needed. Decision: If repairs are made here, clear codes and retest. If code returns, consider replacing the ECU.
